Research Collections

Legendary Canadian history scholar, Professor Michael Bliss, donated his rich collection of Canadian business history volumes to the Rotman School of Management. They are currently housed in the Business Information Centre on the 5th floor of Rotman's new south building.

The Bliss Collection

Michael Bliss is a University of Toronto Emeritus Professor and an Officer of the Order of Canada. One of Canada’s most distinguished historians, he has written an award winning biography of Sir Joseph Flavelle as well as a definitive history of Canadian business entitled “Northern Enterprise: Five Centuries of Canadian Business.” When the Chair in Canadian Business and Financial History at the Rotman School of Management was announced, Professor Bliss gifted his extensive collection of business history volumes to the Business Information Centre [BIC] of the Rotman School.

Financial Post Cards

In 1928, the Financial Post began publishing cards [popularly known as the Yellow Cards] on all the public companies in Canada. The cards contained a wealth of quantitative [balance sheet, P & L] and non-quantitative [history, boards of directors] data. Each year, a new card on every company would be available and if some key matter developed during the year, e.g. Executive/Board change a white card would be sent out. Formerly used by investment professionals, today these cards are an invaluable resource for business students and historians researching Canadian public corporations.
