FAQs: Ask Questions, Get Answers
Have a question about getting into the program? Here are some of our frequently asked questions. If you don't see your answer here, feel free to contact us to ask!
Should I consider the MFin if I already have a CFA designation?
Definitely. The CFA is a valuable and well respected professional designation. That said, the Master of Finance program offers advanced theoretical and applied finance training that is complementary to the CFA and extends beyond that of any other professional finance program. The MFin program provides students with a profound understanding of the ideas, concepts, models and relationships that drive modern business finance.
Do I need to have my CFA to be considered for the MFin program?
We welcome applicants from varying stages of the CFA and will waive the GMAT requirement for applicants who have passed level two or above of the CFA by the time of application. However, it is not necessary for applicants to have started or completed a CFA designation to be considered by the MFin program.
Do I need to be working to apply for the MFin program?
This program is structured for working professionals. We expect all students have employment in the Greater Toronto area prior to starting their studies.
Which quantitative skills are necessary for the MFin program?
While the MFin is not a math-focused finance program, students should be comfortable with algebra and quantitative methods, and prepared to use calculus concepts from time to time. Students who do not feel prepared will have an opportunity to brush-up their basic quantitative skills during the pre-program, before classes begin.
If I fulfill the minimum criteria of admission to the Rotman MFin Program, what are my chances of entry?
Fulfilling the minimum criteria only guarantees you consideration for admission. Due to the competitive nature of the application process, successful applicants tend to exceed the admissions criteria both quantitatively and qualitatively. Successful admission often depends upon both your application and the comparative applications of the other candidates who are vying for the program.
What is the most heavily-weighted part of the application?
At Rotman, we take the holistic approach, looking at all factors of an application and weighing each according to the individual’s total file. We look at the quantitative features of the application such as GPA and GMAT score, but also at the quality of the essay, references, academic background, work and non-academic experiences. There are no one or two most heavily-weighted factors in the application.
Does my undergraduate degree have to be in business or commerce to apply to this program?
Definitely not! While many MFin students will have undergraduate degrees in business or commerce, our students come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
Can I transfer to the Rotman MFin program from another Master’s program?
Due to the integrated curriculum and cohort nature of the MFin program, we are not able to accept transfers from other Master’s programs.
If I’m admitted, how long do I have to make a decision?
You will generally have one month to make a decision and secure your spot with a CAD$5,000 deposit.
